Welcome to Year 1

What to expect in Year 1:

In Year 1, our pupils gradually move away from the child-initiated learning they’ve been used to in EYFS to formal teaching. We follow a mainly thematic approach with additional Drop Down Weeks to supplement and extend learning in a number of subjects over the year. See above for a quick snapshot of what we learn in Year 1.

Pupils continue on their phonics journey and our phonics sessions take place in flexible groupings every morning. The children also spend alternate mornings learning English and Maths and a VIPERS reading session takes place daily.

Phonics Screening:

In the month of June, Y1 children are all required to sit a Phonics Screen. The Phonics Screening Check is a compulsory assessment that all children in year 1 must take. It is used to assess a pupil’s phonic decoding skills. To pass, a pupil must correctly read around 32/40 words correctly. The 40 words in the check are split into sections progressing from simple word structures to trickier words with five or six letters. Out of the words that the children are expected to read, approximately half of them are ‘nonsense words’, alien words that have no meaning. This really tests a child’s phonic decoding skills to check they have the appropriate standard. If you’d like further information about Phonics, please speak to your child’s teacher who will be happy to support you.

Dip And Do Homework - Y1

  • For each half term, we have set 6 activities covering different areas of the curriculum. Children can then pick the activity that most inspires them and motivates them, or that aligns with the current learning - they have the freedom to 'get creative' and are encouraged to share their 'dip and do' in class.
  • Our aim is to make homework fun and engaging! Homework is an extension of our rich and varied new curriculum and these activities are designed to encourage the following and headings may include over the year :

Get observing          Get making          Get thinking          Get creative     Get reading          Get writing

Get inventing          Get researching    Get fit          Get sketching          Get arty          Get visiting          Get talking

  • We will also include online learning using areas such as DB primary (our safe and secure platform), Times Tables Rocks Stars, Spelling Frame activities and Bug Club - we expect all children to READ, READ, READ, READ AND READ SOME MORE!
  • Please do print off a copy as needed; if there are any issues with the links, please contact our admin team. If you would like any of these emailed, do get in touch - we would be delighted to email them to you. Enjoy and have fun dipping and doing!
