What to expect in Year 3:
So your children have left the comfort and familiarity of their infant building and have now transitioned into junior pupils. Year 3 at Oaklands Primary Academy is the start of an incredible learning journey in the Junior school where every child is provided with the best opportunity to develop as a conscientious and accomplished individual. We emphasise the importance of co-operation within the year group to ensure that the transition into the Junior school and throughout the first year of Junior school life is as smooth as possible. We feel passionately about the importance of teamwork and fully encourage our children to support one another in their learning and respect each other’s abilities and opinions. We expect this respect to be present in all areas of school life so that every child feels like an important and valued member of our team. This understanding brings confidence and positivity within our year group, allowing children the opportunity to become more independent in their learning in a comfortable and respectful environment.
In Year 3 we have very high expectations of the standard of work we want to see produced. The children are given a number of opportunities to develop and apply their skills across the curriculum. They'll begin the year as palaeontologists and end as rainforest protectors - pretty great future career choices for a year's work! A fantastic staff team and a number of outstanding tools and facilities including the laptops, tablets and our exciting excursions provide the children with the best opportunity to develop these skills. In return, we expect Year 3 children to apply themselves in everything they do and to only produce work that is to the best of their ability.
We hope that the attitude and expectations generated in and carried throughout Year 3 provide the children with the perfect grounding for a fun, positive and hugely rewarding Junior School life.
What has changed from Year 2?
Year 3 will run quite similarly to Year 2 for the pupils but they will not have daily phonics sessions but formal spelling lessons daily instead. (Phonics sessions will continue for those who still require them though.) The thematic model and Drop Down Weeks that your children are used to will continue as will VIPERS for reading. Homework will be Dip And Do and we really want the children to focus on learning their times tables as they’ll need to know them all by the end of Year 4 and that will come around very quickly! They’ll also need to make a concerted effort to learn as many spellings as possible on the Y3/Y4 Spelling list, which is attached at the end of this webpage, If you have any questions about life in Y3, your child’s class teacher will be only too happy to help.
Our Y3 Curriculum and expectations
Y3 Dip 'N' Do homework
- For each half term, we have set 6 activities covering different areas of the curriculum. Children can then pick the activity that most inspires them and motivates them, or that aligns with the current learning - they have the freedom to 'get creative' and are encouraged to share their 'dip and do' in class.
- Our aim is to make homework fun and engaging! Homework is an extension of our rich and varied new curriculum and these activities are designed to encourage the following and headings may include over the year :
Get observing Get making Get thinking Get creative
Get reading Get writing Get inventing Get researching
Get fit Get sketching Get arty Get visiting Get talking
- We will also include online learning using areas such as DB primary (our safe and secure platform), Times Tables Rocks Stars, Spelling Frame activities and Bug Club - we expect all children to READ, READ, READ, READ AND READ SOME MORE!
- Please do print off a copy as needed; if there are any issues with the links, please contact our admin team. If you would like any of these emailed, do get in touch - we would be delighted to email them to you. Enjoy and have fun dipping and doing!
