What's in store in year 2?
Year 2 - an exciting year:
Year is a really big year for our children. They are now the oldest in the infant department and are becoming ready for their next step in the junior building. Their daily routine is the same as it was in Year 1 – they will continue to have a daily Phonics session, followed by a VIPERS reading session, an English lesson and Mental Mathematics. After lunch, the children will undertake some Maths Mastery then they will enjoy either, Science, PE or Understanding The World. Our Y2 children will also learn primarily through a thematic approach (you can see our themes above) and will also benefit from Drop Down weeks throughout the year for in-depth, immersive study of some subject areas. If you have any questions about learning in Y2, your child’s class teacher will be only too happy to help.
Year 2 tests:
During the month of May, all Y2 pupils across England will take (KS1) national curriculum tests, also known as SATs. Our children do not feel under pressure to sit these tests as we tend to call them ‘Pop Quizzes’ and whilst carrying out the tests, they enjoy healthy treats to fuel them though! Your child’s teacher will use the results of these tests, along with evidence they have seen in the classroom, to make a judgement about your child’s progress and attainment. This overall picture is called a teacher assessment judgement. Your child’s teacher will report their teacher assessment judgements to you by the end of the summer term in the annual school report. You’ll receive judgements for your child in: English reading, English writing, Mathematics and Science. As your child moves into year 3, the teacher assessment judgements will help us to identify if your child needs further support to reach their full potential. When making their teacher assessment judgements, our teachers assess your child’s work against a clearly defined framework. For English reading, English writing and mathematics, each judgement reports if a pupil is: working towards the expected standard; working at the expected standard or working at greater depth within the expected standard. For science, the judgement will only report if a pupil is working at the expected standard. Your child’s marks in each test are converted into a scaled score for that particular subject. At KS1 the range of scaled scores is 85 to 115. A scaled score below 100 means that your child may need more support to help them reach the expected standard. A scaled score of 100 or more means that your child is working at, or above, the expected standard for the key stage. If you wish to discuss any aspects of the KS1 tests, your child’s class teacher will be happy to spend time with you.
Year 2 Curriculum and Expectations
Y2 Dip 'N' Do Homework
- For each half term, we have set 6 activities covering different areas of the curriculum. Children can then pick the activity that most inspires them and motivates them, or that aligns with the current learning - they have the freedom to 'get creative' and are encouraged to share their 'dip and do' in class.
- Our aim is to make homework fun and engaging! Homework is an extension of our rich and varied new curriculum and these activities are designed to encourage the following and headings may include over the year :
Get observing Get making Get thinking Get creative
Get reading Get writing Get inventing Get researching
Get fit Get sketching Get arty Get visiting Get talking
- We will also include online learning using areas such as DB primary (our safe and secure platform), Times Tables Rocks Stars, Spelling Frame activities and Bug Club - we expect all children to READ, READ, READ, READ AND READ SOME MORE!
- Please do print off a copy as needed; if there are any issues with the links, please contact our admin team. If you would like any of these emailed, do get in touch - we would be delighted to email them to you. Enjoy and have fun dipping and doing!
